Copywriter

You want your words to connect, resonate, and engage. You want what you say to make a difference and make sales. Whether it’s for your small business or your nonprofit, I'll help you make a BIG impact.

What you get

I do it all. Headlines, taglines, eyebrow text, body text, tabs, button copy, subscribe box copy, captions, navigation, image descriptions/alt text, and calls to action galore. I do every bit of the copywriting on every single page you hire me for. No letter is left behind.

My copywriting includes SEO, but more importantly, I'll make sure your copy sounds natural and speaks to your ideal clients' needs. It's great to rank high for keywords, but if you're ranking for keywords that your business doesn't actually have anything to do with, that's not converting sales––those are just empty clicks. Plus, people's bullshit detectors are on high alert and you don't want to set off any red flags. I'll make sure your business is ranking for keywords that you actually need to rank for while sounding like a human instead of a shady algorithm-hacking robot.

Dedication you can trust

I've known I wanted to be a writer since I was 5 years old. That was also when I decided to eat the graphite out of a pencil to see if that would magically turn me into a great writer. The graphite tasted terrible! Like a mix of pennies and powder eyeshadow. But did it work? My clients sure think so!

Back in the day, I'd write anything as long as someone would pay me to write. That's how I started writing everything from journalism for small-town newspapers to essays for The New York Times, from travel pieces in monthly magazines to writing fiction for reading comprehension in literacy textbooks, and from copywriting for small businesses and nonprofits to writing a traditionally published nonfiction book. So far, I haven't met a kind of writing that I haven't been able to do.

More than anything, I'm a born storyteller who thrives on weaving words together in compelling ways that captivate people's interest. When I'm copywriting for my clients, I draw on all those experiences to capture their potential customers' attention and trust so they feel excited and confident doing business. That means money, honey.

Editor

Update September 2024:

While I’m primarily focused on finishing my third book (Midwest Shreds is out now and We Had Mansions is hitting shelves in April 2025!), I’m able to take a handful of creative nonfiction and poetry manuscript editing clients. Reach out if you feel like we’d be a good fit!

You just poured your heart out into your manuscript, not to mention a lot of time.

I started out as a nonfiction writer, so that’s what I’m most adept at editing. I’ve edited book manuscripts, teaching materials, artist statements, gallery talks, essays, journalistic articles, and more. In addition to looking at grammar, I’m a developmental editor who looks at the overall narrative arc of your work to ensure your writing is engaging to your readers, true to your voice, meets your goals, and is a work of art you can be proud of for years to come.

Let’s work together to make your writing the best it can be.

No, seriously. I even edit other copywriters’ work. Check out this before and after I did on a professional copywriter’s sales page.

After:

If I can do that for a professional copywriter, just imagine what I can do for you.

Although I started out with creative nonfiction and journalism, I started taking my poetry practice more seriously in 2021 and by 2024, I was an award-winning poet with grants from the Sundress Academy for the Arts and the Greater Columbus Arts Council, an Individual Excellence Award from the Ohio Arts Council, the winner of the 2024 Editor’s Prize in Poetry from Porter House Review, and a signed publishing contract with Diode Editions for my manuscript, We Had Mansions.

Regardless of what I’m editing, I bring a poet’s keen eye, attention to detail, and economy of language to the work.

After garnering some success with poetry, I was asked to edit a poetry manuscript. Here’s what my client, Ellen Williams, author of EMDR Diaries, had to say about the experience:

“I had the pleasure of working with Mandy on editing my first poetry manuscript—a deeply personal exploration of my healing journey as a survivor of intimate partner violence. Mandy's expertise was invaluable; they refined my voice and storytelling with remarkable sensitivity and insight. Their keen eye identified areas where more depth was needed and even inspired several new poems to bridge the gaps. Mandy is not only highly skilled and knowledgeable but also a joy to collaborate with. They came to every editing session well-prepared and ensured my authentic voice remained intact throughout the process. I wholeheartedly recommend Mandy for any editing needs.”

And here’s what my nonfiction clients have to say:

“There really isn’t anything Mandy can’t do, I’m convinced of it! Mandy helped me review and edit my personal statement for my graduate degree application. She did a really great job of making crucial edits but also allowing the statement to still sound like me. One of Mandy’s greatest strengths as a writer is being able to embody the true intention and objective of the piece she is working on, and there’s no doubt that that helped me. I just received my acceptance letter for grad school and I wholeheartedly credit Mandy’s keen eye and ability to helping me with that!”

"My relationship with Mandy started out in a local writing group. Even though I didn’t know her very well, it was clear she was a talented writer, gifted student, and kick-ass human being. On a whim, I asked her to be my blogging partner, I needed somebody to hold me accountable.

However, what I gained was so much more than accountability. Her ability to listen to your goals, then provide you with feedback to create a better version of your story, article, or thought process is exceptional. She reads and digests the content to gain a clear understanding of your message, at times, uncovering something you hadn’t even considered.

Creating client offers has been a bit of a struggle for me. I was writing a message to appeal to and attract my audience, yet I was coming up short with my vision. Mandy read my copy and challenged me to get more specific, providing real time examples of ways I had benefitted my clients. She shed light on exactly what I needed to do to share my gifts and talents, and made it crystal clear. Now, whenever I need help with my writing and message, it’s a no-brainer. I turn to Mandy for support."

"Mandy helped me write an amazing artist statement for my website! I am not that great of a writer, myself. With the help of her amazing writing skills, my portfolio looks more professional than it ever has."

“I’ve been working with Mandy as my professional editor for some time now. Before Mandy, my work was scattered and really missing that ‘it’ factor. I had the creativity, but lacked ability to polish it. Since working together, my writing has garnered the attention of huge publications, and I’m now regularly published in big name magazines. Before I submit any piece of work, I send it Mandy’s way and she fills up the pages with well-thought-out questions, notes, and suggestions. Working with Mandy has given me the professional edge I needed to start making a living with the work I do and I’m so grateful for her. I hope we continue to work together for years to come.”

"Mandy is an incredible editor! I came to her struggling to come up with enough content for an upcoming gallery talk––I was writing about a series of my photographs. There aren’t a lot of examples available for gallery talks, and without a standard structure or model to take inspiration from, I was so worried that I wouldn’t be able to fill up my allotted time in an intelligent and artistic way.

Mandy has such an impactful way of making insightful suggestions and asking key questions that got me diving into my topic in ways my panicked brain hadn’t considered! With each comment, she helped me cover all of my bases in a well-rounded and cohesive way. I began struggling with the length, and ended up with not only enough content for my talk, but enough material to expand into a larger project down the line!

She also guided me into a smoother syntax that helped me present the work spoken aloud, even though I organized and prepared my thoughts like a written paper. She even had suggestions of which slides of images to pair with consecutive ideas in each paragraph that really strengthened my talk as a whole!

10/10, Mandy is a dream to work with! She can tackle traditional papers and non-traditional projects with ease. I began with stress and uncertainty and ended feeling confident and inspired!"

“I loved working with Mandy! She helped me edit a unique writing project that was outside of my usual scope of work. Her suggestions really brought out the poetry of what I was writing and made it a more powerful piece overall. She was quick to get back to me and really seemed to understand what I was trying to accomplish. I highly recommend her services for writers of all types. I'll definitely work with Mandy again in the future.”

My client Kim wrote the sweetest blog post about how having her book edited by me made her feel. She’s still in shock that she’s written a book and that it’s out into the world. I’m so proud of her!

I don’t just correct grammar. I do that and look at the overall narrative arc of your manuscript. I make suggestions for areas to expand, as well as elements to cut. I give recommendations for the order of the chapters and how to better capture your readers’ attention.
