Two piping hot poems in Electric Literature!
I’m always in awe of poets. The vivid images in such short pieces, the economy of language, the way poems make me see the familiar in entirely new ways… I love it. But I struggle to write poetry and always have. My poems are sporadic and unplanned.
One night a few months ago, I laid down to take a nap and as I was falling asleep I randomly started thinking about how Jesus (and my nonexistent relationship to Christianity) might be different if he’d been fat. Growing up Catholic, I was always seeing his ribs showing as he hung on the crucifix and thinking why the hell he didn’t just jump down from there and go eat a decent meal.
Before I knew it, I’d written “if jesus was fat,” which I think is one of the best things I’ve ever written. Then a few weeks after that I did an online poetry workshop where I wrote “hide and seek” about finding the ultimate hiding spot inside the refrigerator when I was a kid, even though it literally almost killed me.
I’m proud to say that both poems are out now in Electric Literature! Please give them a read and let me know what you think. :)
