I’m the child of a man who died, in part, due to decades of opioid addiction. Addiction of any kind can be devastating, especially to family systems, but with the right support, it doesn’t have to be.

Recovery cafes are spaces where people who are going through any kind of addiction or struggling with trauma can go for a free cup of coffee and meal, and be in community with other people who get it. I had the pleasure of writing about Shine Recovery Cafe in Griffith, Indiana, for Arts Midwest, and I truly believe if my father had had access to a resource like this, he might have lived a very different life.
